Due to some pretty random coincidences, I haven’t had to use a virtual keyboard with either a PDA or cell phone since 1999 and my Handspring Visor. (Does anyone remember Graffiti for Palm?) I will admit that giving up my hardware keyboard was a bit of a concern when I purchased my Nexus One…but I figured it was time to see just how good the virtual keyboards have become. Never one to leave well enough alone, I spent the first few weeks trying different keyboards, and these are some random thoughts I have about the ones I have tried.
Default keyboard: I must say I was pretty happy with the default keyboard. Right out of the box it worked as well as could be expected. I liked the little vibrate that went off each time you hit a key. They keys at the edges seemed a bit wonky, still, not a bad choice at all…but I had to see if there was better.
Better Keyboard: Now we are talking. Very similar to the default keyboard, but with more control. The vibration feedback could be set to a lower setting. The keys were a bit bigger and the keys at the edges seemed less wonky. If I were settling for the hunt and peck method of typing, this is what I would use.
Swype: This is my current keyboard of choice…and boy is it great. It takes a bit to get customized and a bit more to get used to (this could be a blog entry all on its own…hmmm…great idea!). It is in secret hidden beta mode right now, but the files are out there if you look for them.
Has anyone else tried a keyboard I have missed???
